THE BEGINNINGS OF A REVOLUTION

Long hair, but still aspiring.

As Newt's hair grew, so did his political aspirations. As a young student his political viewpoints were shaped by extensive readings of Reader's Digest and The Bible and, of course, his hair. Academically, he was a restless student who showed little propensity for detail. He demonstrated an uncanny charisma, partly related to his youthful zeal, but, no doubt, related to his unique hair.

The only known photograph of a trimmed Newt.

Times were busy for Newt. While his political aspirations were showing gains, he met and married his wife, Marianne--a woman he described as his "hair-mate." This is the only known photograph of a trimmed down Newt, a decision he later said he regretted. He knew his hair was a political asset.

Newt, Marianne, Grace Slick, and an orphaned child.

Newt loved making speeches and would jump at any invitation to work a crowd. When the invitations were not forthcoming, he would pull out his American flag and speechify to anyone who would listen. Here we see Newt speaking to Marianne and an orphaned girl. Behind him stands Grace Slick, an early confidante to Newt.
